Tragic News About Rock Icon Phil Collins

Drummer and singer Phil Collins was rushed to the hospital in the early hours of June 8 after falling in his hotel room.

The situation was announced on the 66-year-old musician’s Facebook page, reports the Daily Mail.

“Phil suffers from ‘drop foot’ as a result of a back operation which makes it difficult to walk,” the Facebook post notes. “He rose in the middle of the night to go to the toilet and slipped in his hotel room, hitting his head in the fall on a chair. He was taken to hospital where he had stitches for a severe gash on his head close to his eye and is recovering well.”

As the Mayo Clinic website explains, “Foot drop, sometimes called drop foot, is a general term for difficulty lifting the front part of the foot.” The site continues:

If you have foot drop, you may drag the front of your foot on the ground when you walk. Foot drop isn’t a disease. Rather, foot drop is a sign of an underlying neurological, muscular or anatomical problem. Sometimes foot drop is temporary. In other cases, foot drop is permanent. If you have foot drop, you may need to wear a brace on your ankle and foot to hold your foot in a normal position.

Due to Collins’ head injury, his June 8 and 9 shows at the Royal Albert Hall were rescheduled, but will continue his current tour on June 11 in Cologne, the Facebook announcement said. The tour — his first in ten years — began at the Albert Hall on June 4.

Because of major back surgery in 2015, he has been unable to play drums on the tour, instead remaining seated during the entire show, and walking with the assistance of two canes. His 16-year-old son, Nicholas, is the drummer on the tour.

Collins provided a summary of his back condition in a 2015 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, as quoted by the Daily Mail. “I had an MRI and my back and hips were just shot. The doctor had to go in there, work on the sciatic nerve and take my back apart and unscramble the mess.”

Prior to becoming an unlikely pop star in the early 1980s with the release of his first solo album, Collins was known primarily as the diminutive and balding drummer for the progressive rock band Genesis.  He did not become a singer until Peter Gabriel’s unexpected departure from Genesis forced him to take over the vocals for the group.

Collins explained his decision to tour again after a 10-year hiatus. “I thought I would retire quietly,” he said. “But thanks to the fans, my family and support from some extraordinary artists I have rediscovered my passion for music and performing. It’s time to do it all again and I’m excited. It just feels right.”
